How Does Laser Therapy Help Me With Stress & Anxiety?
Low intensity laser is applied to specific energy points (acupuncture points) on the ears (auricular therapy), head, neck, hands, and feet in order to stimulate the release of neurotransmitters such as dopamine, serotonin, and endorphins. In addition laser helps to reduce your body’s production of cortisol and adrenaline (the main stress hormones). This often reduces the intensity of symptoms related to stress and anxiety.
The end goal is to promote calmness, homeostasis and a balanced flight or flight response in your system.

About Stress
Stress can be divided into two categories, healthy and unhealthy. Healthy stress can be identified as stress that increases the body’s ability to perform well under short or medium term pressure. Examples of healthy stress include reacting quickly in dangerous situations, working towards a deadline, heightened awareness when driving, playing sports, taking a test or exam and speaking public.
Unhealthy stress is prolonged in nature. Some symptoms of unhealthy stress:
- Muscle tension, headaches, neck and back pain.
- Digestive issues such as diarrhea, indigestion, IBS, etc.
- Fatigue
- Heart palpitations, shortness of breath
- Increased or decreased blood pressure, dizziness
- Sugar cravings, weight gain
- Decreased immune system, frequent colds or illness
- Difficulty concentrating
- Sleep challenges
- Anger, Indifference or apathy
- Irritability, moodiness, excessive crying
Stress Hormones — Cortisol and Adrenaline
One common theme with the above concerns is that stress raises your levels of cortisol and adrenaline.
These stress hormones promote what is called the “flight or fight” response in your body. This state causes an increased heart rate, respiration, and high blood pressure. These increases make bodily organs work harder. Over prolonged periods, unhealthy stress can exhaust your adrenal glands, suppresses your immune system and more.
Reducing unhealthy stress is critical to not only managing anxiety, depression, PTSD, TBI but also combating conditions as heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, and inflammation (i.e. arthritis). There are thousands of research articles on the connection between chronic stress and disease. It is estimated that 70-80% of all visits to physicians are for stress related illnesses.
Most people know that the best way to manage stress is to live an active and healthy lifestyle. Eating a well balanced diet, getting enough sleep and regular exercise are some of the main ways to do this.
However, many find starting or maintaining a regime of healthy stress coping behaviours difficult even with the help of their doctor, medication and/or professional counselling. Moreover, many people have adopted negative stress coping behaviours to deal with their stress levels (smoking, drinking, over-eating, etc.) that they may find difficult to quit.
This is where Lazer Dave can help. Many people report Lazer Dave’s treatments helpful in managing stress, quitting bad habits like smoking, treating pain, reducing inflammation and more.
Note: laser therapy is intended to be an adjunct and not a replacement for your doctor’s advice. As such, you should always consult with your doctor regarding any changes in medications and concerns related to your physical, mental and emotional well-being.
